Coog Cinema Reviews – Sherlock Gnomes

Sherlock Gnomes is a 2018 3D computer-animated comedy film directed by John Stevenson, a sequel to 2011’s Gnomeo & Juliet. The animation studio is paramount.
I think this is an enjoyable film. I feel this film had a goal and it achieved it. The film new it didn’t want it to be something to make you cry or think like coco or toy story 3. But bring you a fun and entertaining story. I found myself very entertained in this film.
I think it’s highest points are: first the animation, it is so nicely done and it has a unique style. It doesn’t feel too cartoonish. The character are all made of ceramic but they have so much movement and so many expressions. And the sound effects that follow it make it very polish. You really feel this are garden gnomes but alive.

The have a very interesting element in this film that wasn’t on the first one which is the use of 2D animation. This element is used to explore Sherlock’s mind. It was very interesting to look at and it’s nice to see some innovation and creativity.
I also enjoyed the script a lot. It has a lot of smart humor and jokes that aren’t slap humor. It’s a humor I find sophisticated kinda remind me to the humor of the movie mr Peabody and Sherman. They reference Shakespeare, Elton john and more in very subtle ways. Unfortunately I don’t think they used the humor to it’s full potential. They just tried it a little bit.

The story is very fun. But it has a lot of clishes right from the beginning I knew exactly was was going to happen. And usually you don’t get that in Sherlock stories it’s all about what is going to happen next.
And this one surprised me in some ways but in general it was very predictable.
The first film had a lot of Elton john references and songs. This one I just say the songs weren’t as good they felt forced.
And not memorable.

Johnny Depp did a good voice work as Sherlock but it was very hard for me to Separe the two. Specially since the animator took many mannerism Johnny does and put it on Sherlock. After some time I accepted it but t took time to get used to it for me.
The character were good many had character development and arcs and I appreciated that.
Overall I give this film a 3/5.
I feel if you want a film to just have a good time you should check it out. It’s not a must see but it’s good.
